School Trivia
  • In the school's eighty year history there have only been two music teachers, Lucy Jackson '26-'64 and N. David Stern since '64.


  • Bill Walton '62 has been a student, teacher, coach, vice-principal and principal of SCHS.


  • Hazel Childress '48 retired in '96 as the longest tenured teacher with 44 years of service. She still contributes many hours of volunteer work at the school.


  • The school was changed from Loudon District High School to South Charleston High School during the '33-'34 school year. Classmates played football in the fall as LDHS and then graduated SCHS in the spring.


  • The most common surnames of SCHS graduates are Smith, Pauley, Williams, Miller, Taylor, Johnson, Hill, Hudson and Davis.


  • The Charleston Daily-Mail's list of the Top 100 Kanawha County Prep Athletes of the millennium included Alex Hawkins '55, Gary Gregor '63, Robert Alexander '77, Carl Lee '79, Gay Elmore '82, David Bradley '84 and Mark Plants '95.
